CALLIOPE
(for solo soprano, 1884)

The texts used in Calliope consists of selected phrases from The Making of Americans by Gertrude Stein. Calliope is an attempt to approach music via litterature. A music where the spoken word remains a dominating feature throughout the piece and where all other layers (whether whisper, sprechstimme or song) are derived from the spoken line. Thus, the piece consists of a multiple of voices in what one could call an immanent heterophony. These various layers should be performed with different and distinct characters of expression.
